FOR STEP PARENTS
My first two months teaching preschool the kids tested me 24-7
EVERYbody told me to stay FIRM and the kids would come around.
But they didn't until one day the cook whispered:
They aren't testing your Authority, they are testing your love.
In other words children give their obedience as a gift.
Until that gift is given be patient, defer discipline to the birth parent.
My second discipline lesson was from a BAD three year old.
He was on an eternal time out until one day I heard a sermon on Mercy,
So I asked the child which he liked better justice or mercy.
He said "What is mercy?"
"Mercy is where you promise not to do it again and you don't get a time out".
He said I will have Mercy please.
Almost instantly this child took responsibility for correcting himself.
In kid talk "If you won't do it again we don't need to tell your Mom/Dad.
Or in the words of Josh McDowell:
"Rules without relationship lead to rebellion."
It is our prayer that step parents everywhere
